You've had your time begins as its author returns from Malaya in 1959 to a diagnosis that he has only a year to live. And it ends in 1982 with the centenary celebrations of James Joyce's birth, which prompt the author to certain conclusions about the relationship between literature and life.

Faced with his death sentence, Burgess begins to write - novels, film scripts television series, articles - desperate to earn a living through the written word and provide succor to the woman he fears will be his widow. At first the writing brings little success, but with the explosion of A clockwork orange (and consequent calls for him to comment on violent atrocities of all sorts), the obligations of celebrity begin to interfere with the writing. Vast Hollywood projects are destined to evaporate, the critics snarl at his novels, his journalism scandalizes the morally scrupulous, and his wife refuses to quit drinking until the inevitable end. With a second marriage that brings him a four-year-old son, and with critical praise for Earthly powers after a long barren period, comes a triumphant rebirth of sex, creative energy, and travel.

Laced with incomparable vignettes (Borges and Burgess conducting a conversation in Anglo-Saxon, for instance), You've had your time is as varied and hectic as the nomadic literary life it discribes. Rarely has a writer exposed his inner life so completely, and rarely has a writer's life been described with such vigor, polymathic humor, and verve for language. The result is a remarkable story, remarkably told, by a remarkable man.

Binding is tight, spine fully intact. Dustjacket is in as new condition, contains no tears or chips or other damage. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Excellent copy.
