This beautiful book was inspired by and is based on the Becht Collection. For Baekeland bakelite was "the material of a thousand uses". This book shows that it can also be 'used' as a subject in many meaningful ways.

Aan de hand van een tiental artikelen door internationale specialisten worden diverse kanten van bakeliet, de eerste kunststof, belicht. Onder meer: biografie van de uitvinder, de Belgische Amerikaan Leo Baekeland (1863-1944), ontwikkeling en productie in Engeland, vormgeving en functie, de positie als revolutionair materiaal, gebruik in de moderne kunst, overzicht van toepassingen vanaf circa 1920 tot heden, chemische achtergronden, praktische aanwijzingen voor conservatie en restauratie, de collectie van de Nederlander Frits Becht. Ook zijn historische artikelen van Roland Barthes en Baekeland opgenomen. Met een lijst van de uiteenlopende typen voorwerpen in de collectie Becht, die sinds de eerste expositie ervan in 1981 is verdrievoudigd tot 2000 objecten.
