front1

The Atlantic Monthly Press, New York. 1987. First USA Edition. Stated first printing on copyright page. Hardcover. Gilt spine titled brown buckram. With photographic dust jacket. Frontispice. 199 pp. 22¾ x 28¾ x 2 cm. 1142 gr. ISBN-10 0-87113-171-4. Edited and introduced by Roland Huntford. Book designed by Trevor Vincent. With the bookplate of Frederick Ellis. With 3 full-page maps and 168 illustrations from original photographs taken on Amundsen's expeditions (over half in colour). Frontispiece. Epilogue. Index. Reproductions from Amundsen's glass slides. Includes: Amundsen's North-West Expedition 1903-06, the South Pole Expedition 1910-12, and the Maud Land Expedition 1918-23, with maps of each.

In 1986 a relative found more than 200 of Amundsen's original lantern slides, which he had used on his many lecture tours. These color and black and white photos were discovered in an attic after Amundsen's death. These pictures record the 3 most important exhibitions: through the North West Passage in 1903, the 1911 attainment of the South Pole (covered most prominently) and the 1918 journey through the North East Passage from Siberia. A poignant blend of immediacy, artlessness and authenticity. Many of the colour photo's seem to derive from the hand-coloured lantern slides but when this colour was applied is not clear.

Minor rubbing dustjacket front cover and rear panel, otherwise fine. Front of dustjacket has small tear, hardly visible, else Fine. Internally clean and bright, no defect. Dust jacket is not price-clipped and has no shelf wear. Binding tight, book is square, no odors. A bright, clean unmarked copy in very fine condition. A tight solid sound copy with clean text and illustrations. Near Fine / Very Fine.

In perfektem Zustand. Wie neu.

In the half-century after the invention of the daguerreotype in 1839, photographers, tourists, explorers and missionaries trekked to alien cultures from Egypt to Iraq, taking their conceptual baggage with them. This hypnotic assemblage of 275 photographs is a flowing panorama of ambivalent imageswomen of Bethlehem, Berbers, the serene, majestic Sphinx, Arab rice vendors and musicians, the Wailing Wall, Armenian monks in Jerusalem. Perez is a curator at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and organizer of an international exhibit, which this album catalogues. In an enlightening essay, he examines the typical Westerner's trip to the Near East (or Orient) as a bourgeois rite of passage to an idealized terrain. While travelers treated Biblical sites or Egyptian monuments with respect and reverence, they viewed the local people as curiosities. The photographs are full of period charm, many have historical value, none is without interest. This book is the most comprehensive volume ever published on 19th century Near Eastern photographs and presents an intriguing look at life in the East - from Egypt to th Ottoman Empire - and traces the progress of the early photographic pioneers.
